Monterey Cypress Tree Felling, Totnes

The Client Brief

For this project, the Kneebone Trees team were called to a property in Totnes, where two very mature Monterey Cypress trees were growing along our client’s boundary. These mature trees had begun to overhang the neighbouring properties below, which was a significant concern for both our clients and their surrounding homeowners due to the site’s exposed and windy location.

The location and size of the trees posed a significant risk of large limb failure, which could lead to property damage, injuries and other issues. While this can be a risk with many types of overgrown trees, it is a particular concern for Monterey Cypress trees, as this species is notorious for shedding heavy branches without warning.

Due to the risks of this tree, our team were called to Totnes to look at potentially securing the tree, reducing the risk of collapse and damage.

The Challenges

The size and species of the at-risk trees were big challenges within this project, due to the risk they posed. Monterey Cypress (Macrocarpa) trees frequently shed heavy branches, seemingly without warning, and in such an exposed location, this risk was drastically increased.

Likewise, the age of the trees meant their branches and limbs were a significant size and weight. This meant that if they fail or fall, serious damage would occur, affecting both our client and their neighbours. These two trees had overgrown the boundary lines between our client’s home and their neighbours, and it was their responsibility to resolve this issue.

What We Did

To determine the best course of action for these Monterey Cypress trees, we first performed a tree survey. Our team assessed the situation of the tree, and in addition spoke with our client regarding the situation. This allowed us to learn more about the risks and the overall condition of the tree, which would be used to decide how to approach this issue.

Following the assessment, our tree surgeons determined that the risks outweighed the benefits of retaining the trees. We therefore carried out a full removal of both macrocarpas.

Sustainability is a huge value for Kneebone Trees and something we aim to incorporate into everything we do. In keeping with our sustainable approach, we worked with the client to retain and repurpose sections of the Monterey Cypress main stems. These large pieces will be milled into slabs on-site and used to create custom furniture.

The Outcome

Our clients now have a safe landscape and can rest assured that no damage will occur to their home or any of the neighbouring properties. This work was carried out to the highest standards to ensure a safe and complete removal of the Monterey Cypress trees.

Due to our sustainable values, we have ensured that the removed wood will not go to waste, and is instead being repurposed locally. This is a great way to give new life to the timber while reducing waste.
