frequently asked questions

Stump removal typically involves either grinding the stump down below ground level or excavating it entirely and disposing of the roots and debris. Removing a stump prevents safety hazards (trip-risks), stops new shoot growth, and removes potential pest or fungal problems.
  • Stump grinding uses a machine to grind the stump and some roots below ground level, turning the remains into wood chips; it’s quicker and less disruptive.
  • Full stump removal/excavation involves digging out the stump and major roots entirely, which is more labour- and equipment-intensive but leaves a completely clear site and removes more of the root system.
Key factors include: whether the stump is a trip hazard or visually undesirable; whether roots could cause damage to nearby structures or paving; whether the stump is badly rotting and attracting pests or fungi; whether you plan to re-turf or landscape the area.
The cost depends on, for example: the size (diameter) of the stump, root spread, accessibility of the site (narrow gate, confined garden), whether full removal or just grinding is required, whether additional ground reinstatement is needed.
After stump grinding or removal, the area is typically filled or levelled and can then be re-landscaped, turfed, planted with new trees/shrubs or used for construction.
