The Client Brief
Our client, a homeowner in Paignton, encountered a significant problem with an ageing Monterey Cypress tree on their property and hired our team to help with this project.
This tree was located in a high-risk area, straddling the boundary of four properties. Due to the tree’s maturity, large limbs had begun to drop from the canopy posing safety risks, as well as making the site unattractive. This drooping of the limbs is a common issue with Monterey Cypress trees as they age and is something our team has experience with.
For this project, the client required us to reduce the tree down to a monolith to make the space safer and more attractive.
The Challenges
The main challenge in this project was the tree’s location. Being near a historic boundary wall at the junction of four properties added complexities to the project and the kind of work we could do when felling the tree.
The tree was also adjacent to a newly laid patio and too close to two dwellings for comfort, meaning the safety and preservation of homes was another challenge we had to take great care to overcome.
Beyond the strategic felling of the tree, transporting the branches and logs also posed a logistical challenge, as they had to be manually moved to our vehicle and chipper, which were situated around 30 meters from the property.

Once they were removed, the branches and logs then had to be manually transported to the front driveway for disposal.
The Outcome
We successfully fell the Monterey Cypress down to a monolith, solving the problem of falling limbs that could have posed a significant risk to the properties and the historic wall.
