The Client Brief
For this project, we were commissioned by a local authority in Tavistock, West Devon, to deliver a crown reduction on one of their Norway Maple trees. Kneebone Trees is on the local supplier list for tree care services, which is why we were hired by local authorities for this particular task.
The tree was in a busy urban green space and had over-extended limbs leaning precariously over a bus stop and an adjacent road, raising serious safety concerns to the people of Tavistock.
To remove this risk and ensure the tree continued to be safe and attractive feature to the area, we needed to work with meticulous care.
The Challenges
This particular project presented a unique combination of environmental and safety challenges, which meant it required meticulous care and precise tools to get it done right.
The tree’s close proximity to both a bus stop and busy road made this task not only about reducing the risk of branch failure but also ensuring the safety of the public during the operation. The public’s safety during the operation was a main concern and one of the biggest challenges during this project.
Furthermore, getting access to the entire tree for thorough and safe crown reduction was another significant challenge due to the public using the space. We needed to make sure we could access the tree and perform our crown reduction work without hindering the safety of the public, both those using the bus stop or the adjacent road.

As the safety of the public was a major concern during this project, we first deployed our in-house traffic management to create a safe working zone on the road. This allowed our team to handle the crown reduction safely and mitigate any risk to the public during the operation.
To deliver the crown reduction, our team used a mobile-tracked cherry picker to reach all areas of the tree. This allows us to provide a comprehensive and effective crown reduction through greater access, as well as creating safer working conditions for our team.

The risk of branch failure was significantly reduced due to the effective crown reduction, resulting in a safer environment for both the public using the bus stop and the vehicles on the adjacent road.
